a club in the parthenon basement where you cant see in front of you, you lose yourself as the antipodean heat beat surrounds you. this is the latest imagination of melbourne-based band leader nicolaas oogjes. marrying into a greek family (his wife contributes spoken word on two tracks), oogjes became fixated with hellenic culture and its impact on humanity, prompting his rotating cult of collective consciousness musicians no zu to spiral deeper into their celebration of global rhythm and percussion. their even weirder, sparser and more synth driven sound is the result of creative exchanges with home loan records ceo michael ozone, who helped them realise the strange and complete world of medusa music.

berlins away music imprint extends a warm welcome here with its debut release, a label inspired by the spirit of the >away< series of parties they have taken from berlin to barcelona, with a launch release from compatriot christian vance. fuelled by an uncompromising ethos that will see the ep via a limited run of 350 vinyl copies, vance is supported on >away music 001< by remixes from nuno dos santos and label bosses discrete circuit themselves. lead record >mustang fm< offers the perfect example of vances polished production talents, a groove-driven techno number that simmers with a midwestern pulse around the edges. the grittiest of the offerings you will find on this ep, its propelled by the twisted riff at its center, around which vance skillfully deploys a cast of hi-hats to compliment his bouncy percussion. strictly limited to 350 copies

the third issue of raw waxes’ release number four is on the way. after featuring mike parker, haiku, inigo kennedy and korova as remixers of the noisemaker, this time we see abstract division and blind observatory reinterpreting ‘shuttle’, the final track of the series. shuttle starts with a fat kick and a psychedelic synth, bleep and acid elements go back and forth, up and down, appearing from the gloom of the artist’ soul. hi-­&#8208,,,hats, acid and bleep evolve together, embracing acidity and generating a naughty groove. abstract division’s reinterpretation is clearly a 4/4 dance floor oriented. based on the evolution of the acid patterns as a minded loop, the dutch duo adds 909 hi-­&#8208,,,hats and claps, modify the the kick-­&#8208,,, bass structure, reaching a trusted track for exciting moments into clubs. blind observatory’s remix is the gentle side of the record. starting slowly and lightly, the artist sets a mellow synth plus clean hi-­&#8208,,,hats, turning the production into a sweet idm caress. a personal, delicate cut appraising the entire release.

the man like octo octa: best known for his still devastating let me see you cut for 100% silk, the brooklyn producer graces running back with four fine cuts. creating the new, while respecting the old, the more times ep features heavy house (more times), twitchy house (fever dream), dubby house (take me to the dark) and breakbeat house with due respect to ltj bukem (dresses). thats a lot of house for your money. music for clubs and places that would like to be clubs. watch out for octo octa on the back of the brilliant cover.

refined selector and esteemed producer, steve braiden breaks out on his own with the off out label after some excellent releases for the likes of rush hour and joy orbison s now defunct doldrums label. its a good day when there is some new braiden productions to soak up, and hopefully the establishment of off out will see them appear with more regularity in the future. as an opening statement, apex of the sun s way is a powerful one indeed! the title track is characterised by the sort of rhythmic poise we have come to expect from a braiden production, with searing emotive textures rubbing up against some of the crispest drums heard this year. - solar poise- is equally memorable, with strange ghostly vocals trapped deep in the mix and an unpredictable synth careening around the channels.

radio bands radio rap the one and only single by a group of djs from the radio fantasy pirate station has long been an in-demand gem with italo-disco diggers and balearic heads alike. with original copies both hard to find and expensive (currently hovering around the l60 mark online), it s great to see archeo recordings giving the 1984 cut a much-needed reissue on heavyweight vinyl. the quirky vocal version a loose and funky disco-rap record with additional boogie synths and all italian vocals is accompanied by the superb instrumental version, which perfectly showcases danilo ciarchi s superb production.

this is the first entry in red axe s shem series on i m a cliché which will see the israeli duo releasing tracks geared towards the dancefloor but always retaining the one-of-a-kind approach that it distills in all its productions

more nordic talents knocking on the door with some proper house! junk yard connections is the debut release of stocktown duo laguna ladies. aside of the original there are remixes by moomin and baba stiltz. moomin give us a flashback to the 90s bouncy yard, with sunshine and blunts when baba flipping the happy acid vibe up side down and goes into the techno wildness. great to see junk yard connection going so strong!

roots for bloom hits its tenth release and welcomes carlos sanchez & alex kaddour to the label. this ep is made for the floor, its no nonsense, groove based house music at its best. tough basslines drive the a side black freddie s moustache and echoey vocals stab through. on the flip the basslines remain at the forefront of your attention, but this time layered alongside more mysterious synth lines and twisted vocals. with previous releases on the likes of 8bit and poker flat its easy to see why these guys will fit right in at the roots for bloom camp.

the mighty bohari return with another in their split-single series, showcasing new and exciting artists. we have no idea who barrut fulsara is and he wont tell us a thing - all we know is that he has been in the game for a long time, and that this new moniker is for his excursions into deeper territory. were just happy he chose bokhari as the outlet. joe europe on the flip delivers the kind of synth-laden quirky house that we love at bokhari and were pleased for this beautiful track to finally see the light of day.

roots for bloom label boss jamie trench kicks off the label offshoot rfbcolours with a collaboration ep alongside rebel. the a side tracks come from jamie himself. -good love- has a stripped back garage feel with a jacking and filtered vocal carrying it, then stapled brings things across with a more techno feel with strong stabs and background drifting chords. the b side is where we see rebel s input, with the rolling and infectious in the end . the groove is again stripped back and simple but it s this that carries the vocal that demands your attention. the two then pair up for we don t fly first class and it s apparent to hear in the track where the two come together well. this one is driven by a huge sub bass line and simple stabs and talking and seductive vocal lines.

dark entries and honey soundsystem have teamed up to release to release a special double vinyl edition of *catholic*, the lost opus of disco pioneer patrick cowley and indoor life vocalist jorge socarras. this compilation features over 80 minutes of minimal proto-techno and synth-driven post punk recorded between 1975-1979.

uncanny valley and permanent vacation are joining forces for an uncanny vacation! there has always been a lively exchange between dresden and munich and both labels are known for releasing a wide variety of music so it was only natural to team up for a joint release. the record starts off with permanent vacation-regular and uk-veteran dmx krew and his “astro logical” which is as sharp and crisp as electro can go. the bass line strikes hard but he also squeezes some great melancholic synth lines out of his machines. after that, uncanny valley’s sandrow m finally gives access to the much in demand live version of “prayervan”, a tune that everybody has been singing along during his live sets. on the flipside, jacob korn (who already released on both labels) hands in “eieiei” which rises on a percussion-heavy drum basement to a discoid house stomper thanks to an irresistible sample straight from an obscure flea market find. last but not least, drvg cvltvre from the netherlands delivers a tropical house jam. “see you again” is riding on a funky disco bass line and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere with a whole bag of sound ideas. alexander dorn aka credit 00 adds his graphical talents to the record’s sleeve with a brilliant tribute to 1990s adventure video games.

the swedish trance duo son kite is back, releasing their first album in ten years. and they are on a mission. *dancing is a very important ritual. our main mission as artists is to make people get into this trance state*, they say. since the release of their third album *colours* in 2004, marcus henriksson and sebastian mullaert have been focusing on their other project minilogue, touring the world and gaining increasing popularity in the house and techno scene. with *prisma*, released on november 17th and consisting of seven tracks made between 2007 and 2014, the duo leaps back to the endless energy and enthusiasm they felt when they first started making music together in 1996. and back to what it is all essentially about, according to the two musicians: getting into the all-important dance ritual and reaching the trance state.

a lot of water has passed under the bridge since the release of etienne jaumet’s night music, dating from october 2009. his hypnotizing music and enchanting live performances put him directly on the map. it’s just him who is in control of his ship. he moves without complexes from his saxophone to his drum machine (his beloved tr 808) while turning knobs modulating synths, and sending his voice through an echo.la visite, etienne’s brand new album, more luminous and jazzy than its predecessor, has been composed and produced within a two month period in the versatile studio. it became a piece of introspection, mentally as well as physically. in the title track, for which flop wrote the text, we hear etienne travelling through the inside of a body, fantastic voyage style.it is always surprising to see a record taking shape. etienne would arrive at the studio without any precise idea in head, approaching his work rather intuitively. he works standing up, which brings a very different energy than being seated behind a computer polishing up every detail. he is in total mastery of his set-up, ready to capture that short-lived moment of true creation. the only use a computer has for him, is to record his experiments - afterwards being mixed by jerome caron (blackjoy).in between night music and la visite, etienne has not been lazy. not only has he done numerous collaborations (amongst others with joakim, richard pinhas, francois & the atlas mountain) and picked up djing, he has also recorded a new zombie zombie album (rituels d’un nouveau monde) with cosmic neman, as well as the soundtrack loubia hamra. and he worked with artist felicie d estienne d orves on the installation satori. at this very moment, etienne and his saxophone are still part of the tour of james holden.
